A comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established to describe the reacting flow of coal pyrolysis in hydrogen plasma downer reactors. The model predictions showed good accordance with the experimental results of the 2-MW and 5-MW pilot-plant reactors. The operating conditions were optimized to improve the 5-MW reactor performance.
