PREFACE

It has been a great honor to chair the ECI conference Shotcrete for Underground Structures XIV, which was held in Pattaya, Thailand in November 2019.

The conference presentations encompassed a wide range subjects covering state-of-the-art technology and best practices in rock engineering, rock support methods, TBM tunneling and deep excavation. For the first time in the history of the conference, this event also included practical spraying demonstrations showing shotcrete application and various state of the art waterproofing technologies.

The event represented an ideal opportunity for sharing knowledge with participants from various universities, international contractors and engineering consultancies, suppliers of construction chemicals and shotcreting equipment as well as numerous international and regional experts from related fields.

As conference chair and on behalf of all participants, I wish to express our appreciation to the management of Nong Nooch Garden, who made this a very special and pleasant event, which will certainly be remembered as a highlight of the conference series. The Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens represent a fantastic location, combining an exotic environment with modern state of the art conference facilities.

A big thank you goes to all sponsors and participants of the shotcrete spraying demo, which offered practical insights into shotcrete application as well as various other underground construction technologies.

Finally, I also wish to thank the highly competent organizer Engineering Conferences International (ECI) as well as all colleagues from ILF Consulting Engineers who actively helped with the organization of the event before, during and after the conference, which ensured a highly rewarding experience for all participants.
